Making the most of your brithday in Tallinn, Estonia

Tuesday, July 17, 2012

One thing that doesn't pop into your head immediately when you take a cruise contract is that you will have no control over where you will be on your birthday.  Knowing Marcy, Tallinn, Estonia is probably one of the last places on earth she would have picked to have her birthday.  But fortunately, it was one of our favorite stops for the rest of us, so we decided to make the most of it and show her as best a time as we could have in her least favorite place.
The presents on the bus go round and round.
Here's a little taste of what our day was like:

And here is the full story:
We started with a shuttle over to Old Town, Disneyland, I mean Tallinn.

"Can we go on Snow White?"

The lines for the rides are so well done...wait, what am I saying?  This is an actual underground tavern.  Picture walking along the streets of Boston, and you know how many bars are steps going down into the basement, like the original Cheers bar...this is the Estonian version.

Don't bump your head.

We continued our wanderings through the many old style medieval taverns and eventually picked the place with the biggest beer mugs.

Underhand vs Overhand, you decide.
Now before you go thinking that all this was fake, I have this to say:

Oh yeah!
And the food was pretty good as well.

Actually, it was the Wurst!  (Ah ha ha ha...eh)

Pretzel Frame
Mission Accomplished.

From there we stumbled up the circular town to it's highest parts

Are we there yet, Vince?
That spire in the back was at one point the tallest structure in the world.
Up at the top, they serve hot spiced wine.

Terviseks!  (Estonian for Cheers)
And then it was onward for what became my favorite thing to do in all of the Baltic.

Is this not the coolest thing in the world?
 Archery!

Take Aim

 And Fire!

She got a bullseye!

Not bad for my first time, eh?
Go team SilverSea!
I wanted to get a picture with my teacher.  For only 10 euro, you got a lesson with ten shots followed by a tournament.  Not bad!  I would later come back and visit this same place.  On one occasion the lady running it asked me if I had studied with her husband because she had recognized his technique.  Imagine that?  I guess he was a really good teacher.

Me and the Professor.
Well Marcy, I hope you had a wonderful day.  I know it sucks to not be able to pick where you have your birthday when you work on a cruise, but we hope being surrounded by people who love you makes up for it a little bit.  Hey, we couldn't help but notice that Estonian women are the hottest in the world.  How about a pose to show them how much you fit in?

Marcy proving that Estonian women ain't got nothing on her.
AND ME RIDING A DUCK!
The end.
Indeed it was all it was quacked up to be.
